Implants

A dental implant is a surgically placed post which mimics the form and function of a natural tooth.  A natural tooth consists of a root and a clinical crown. The crown is the visible part of your tooth. It is used to chew food and is therefore the most susceptible to the potentially harmful environmental influences including fracture and dental disease. The crown is attached and anchored to the jawbone by the root. When decay, fracture or periodontal disease has advanced enough to warrant an extraction, the entire tooth, root and all, is taken out. The dental implant is a metal post or “root” that gets fitted into a socket created in your jaw. Once the bone heals around the implant, another post or “abutment” specifically made for that implant is placed inside providing a support for an artificial crown on top. The new crown is customized to match your bite and the color of your teeth.
