Bridges

A fixed bridge is often a good option to replace a missing tooth space where there are sound neighboring teeth, neighboring teeth with decay and/or large fillings, or even adjacent teeth with existing crowns.  Whether a tooth that has been missing for a long time or has recently been extracted, we will often recommend bridges as opposed to dental implants.  Considerations in making the recommendation include how many teeth are missing, sound nature of the adjacent teeth, possible surgical obstacles with implant placement, finances and how quickly the patient may want to have a permanent replacement for the missing tooth or teeth.  All these factors are discussed with our patients so that they may make the best informed decision that works best for them.

Types of Bridges:

  • Traditional —Crowns are placed over teeth that are on either side of the missing one(s) to provide support and attachment of the missing tooth (or teeth) to your own teeth
  • Resin-bonded — Porcelain or plastic teeth with gums that are supported by metal “wings” that are bonded to the teeth adjacent to the empty space
